Boxers and Bullmastiffs

The history of the Bullmastiff began around the year 1860 in England. The gamekeepers of large estates decided to enlist the help from the greatest protectors nature has given to man - the dog. Numerous breeds were tried. The Mastiff, while courageous and powerful, was not fast enough nor aggressive enough. The Bulldog, big, strong and active in those days, was a bit too ferocious and not big enough for their needs. These men wanted dogs that would remain silent at the approach of poachers. They needed fearless dogs that would attack on command. They wanted the poachers thrown and held, but not mauled. For these needs they crossed the Mastiff and Bulldog, 60 % Mastiff and 40% Bulldog. From this cross, the Bullmastiff was founded. In those days the Bullmastiff was known sometimes by his present day name, but more often known as the " Gamekeeper's Night-Dog"
The breed was granted recognition the English Kennel Club in 1924. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1933. The affection of a lap dog is combined with  its weight and strength making them a dependable family companion and protector.
